as grover said himself, the pledge is to the american people, not to grover norquist. so it's not just, you know, republicans need grover norquist's approval for what they want to do. it's more that americans for tax reform wants to keep tax rates low despite the fact that legislation says they're just going to go up no matter if congress doesn't do anything. >> all right. so compromise is going to require more than finding republicans who are willing to break with the norquist anti-tax pledge. the gop wants to know what the democrats are going to be willing to give up in the form of spending cuts. >> despite the claims that president supports a balanced approach that democrats have yet to get serious about real spending cuts. >> jessica, the president ran and won on a promise to raise taxes. i mean what a different scenario. a year ago you and i were talking about how this he lction was going to be about jobs. both campaigns made exactly the same promise about job creation. so that almost got off the table. it all became about taxes. he doesn't have to run for office

that is what you are seeing to it is not just anti-grover norquist movement. it is a realization that they have a political problem. >> a lot of positive signs for a deal. one is that grover norquist, who is kind of a ridiculous figure, it has been exposed as that and people are walking away. businessmen are in town saying we want predictability, and that is a good sign. but the indication from the white house is that obama is pretty dug in -- i want, i will break those republicans. maybe it is just a bargaining position, maybe he is making it, but the feeling is that he really does want to bust the other side. >> what happened in the debt ceiling fight is that they thought they could just do this in work is so they put it out in public. >> but he wants to raise the debt ceiling. >> that is part of the leverage that republicans have -- >> the best leverage if they have. >> obama thinks he has all the cards, he thinks he is napoleon, or perhaps lbj after his landslide. obama won this election by three points. 95% of republicans in the house won by a larger marg

i'm stuck speaking to many more ceos than grover norquist is. he thinks it's silly. he thinks ceos are silly. i don't think they're silly. they control hiring in this country. many americans play for dinner. i don't think grover norquist cares about who is paying to dinner. he has a pledge. it's important to him and important to the people who agreed to it. i worry about dinner for people. i worry about rising above and dinner for people. he won't surprise it. ceos do. he has his principles. i went to college with him. he's a very nice man. very nice. >> you have a history. we should keep that in mind. >> sweet guy. likes the cliff. wants to jump over. favors recession. that's how i read that. recession isn't bad thing if you're a short seller. if you can go short, you can get your way. it could be big. >> it could be. >> it could be huge. you never know. >> at least for some period of time. >> yeah. >> there is a big analysis on the cover of "times" about talks as they stand right now. they say the president has been burned, scarred is the word they used by the prev

we've got grover norquist and john boehner and a couple of the bat crap crazies, as you like to call them, holding the rest us hostage. >> they will all vote for this. do we go off the curb or the cliff and do you have to go back when someone asks you, why did not you vote for this on december 5th when you could have done it? why did you wait into january? let the markets crash. take that uncertainty out and cause the stress to the american families. >> i had democratic senators tell me months ago that they were hearing from a couple of republican senators in the cloak room that they actually need us to go off the cliff so they can then cast a vote that is purely interpreted as a tax cut no matter how you look at i. have you heard anything like that from any whispers from the republican side in the house? >> no. no. not in there. and it is strange. i would have thought a month, there is a different reality out there. >> it set in with you. >> it has. i said i've been reasonable to compromise. no, i don't think it has yet. and for me, what is so unfortunate about this. this is what dr

norquist. that is politically courageous. many have already said this. i respect them so much for it. as more do, it will create an environment for us to reach an agreement. we need the same willingness to step 4 on the left to be able to meet in this room at the table or wherever the room maybe and to come to an agreement that will lead us forward. one thing i am hoping for is if we can reach an agreement, in principle before the end of the year, then implement it, i believe this is what many have been waiting for to launch a more spirited recovery. if we get this done, if we have a credible $4 trillion deficit reduction plan signed and sealed, signed by the president, what does that say to the rest of the world? many economies in europe and other places are struggling, but ours will be the strongest in the world in terms of the future. it takes a lot of hard work but it is worth the effort. all will prosper. saturday night, my wife and i went to see a movie by spielberg. about another gentlem
